Quick answer: For 2027, United Premier status depends on PQP alone, with no flight count path. Silver needs 6,000 PQP, Gold 12,000, Platinum 18,000, and 1K 32,000, plus at least 4 United flights per year.

United just announced the biggest MileagePlus status shakeup in years, and the headline word — “simplifying” — is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Starting January 1, 2027, there is exactly one way to earn Premier status: Premier qualifying points. Flight segments (PQF) no longer count as a path. If you earned status the cheap way, on segments, your price just went up.

What changed

Through December 31, 2026, you could qualify two ways: a lower PQP total plus a flight count, or a higher PQP total alone. From 2027, only the PQP total matters:

Tier2026 (either path)2027 (PQP only)
Silver15 flights + 5,000 PQP or 6,000 PQP6,000 PQP
Gold30 flights + 10,000 PQP or 12,000 PQP12,000 PQP
Platinum45 flights + 15,000 PQP or 18,000 PQP18,000 PQP
1K60 flights + 22,000 PQP or 28,000 PQP32,000 PQP

Silver, Gold, and Platinum match today’s points-only numbers — no change if you qualified on spend alone. 1K is the outlier: 32,000 PQP is 14% above today’s points-only bar and roughly 45% above the old 60-flight path. Year-end segment runs are officially dead.

Two things that did not change: you still need at least 4 United or United Express flights per year (partner flights don’t count), and nothing about 2026 earning changes — this affects status you earn during 2027, held in 2028.

The family math: don’t chase this on a credit card

United lets you earn PQP on card spend — 1 PQP per $15 on the United Club cards — and raised the annual cap to 32,000 PQP to match the new 1K bar. Technically, you could earn 1K without flying much. Practically:

  • Platinum on card spend alone: $270,000 in spending. That’s not a strategy, it’s a cry for help.
  • Even Silver’s 6,000 PQP would take $90,000 in card spend.

If your family flies United a few times a year, status was never really on the table, and these changes don’t move you further away. The people who lose are frequent flyers who gamed the segment path — not vacation travelers.

One deadline that might matter: December 31

Eligible United cardholders get a 5% head start on 2027 status — PQP deposited when the year begins: 300 for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum, 1,600 for 1K. Open an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and you get the deposit too. If your family already carries a United card, that’s free progress. If you were considering one, the deadline is real.

Also changing: PlusPoints upgrades move to dynamic pricing for travel from February 1, 2027 — another quiet devaluation tucked into the announcement.

The bottom line

United didn’t simplify status. It converted it to a pure spending contest and raised the top bar 45% for the travelers who’d figured out the old game. For most families, the correct response is nothing — keep booking the cheapest fare, ignore the status chase, and let the road warriors absorb this one.

What are the new United Premier status requirements for 2027?

Silver 6,000 PQP, Gold 12,000 PQP, Platinum 18,000 PQP, 1K 32,000 PQP — earned during 2027, for status held in 2028. Flight segments (PQF) no longer count.

Did United eliminate PQF?

Yes. Starting January 1, 2027, Premier qualifying flights are gone as a status path. You still need at least 4 United/United Express flights per year to be eligible, but segments no longer reduce the PQP requirement.

How much harder is United 1K in 2027?

32,000 PQP vs. 28,000 today on the points path (+14%), and vs. 22,000 PQP + 60 flights on the old segment path (+45%).

Can you earn United status from credit card spending?

Yes — eligible United cards earn 1 PQP per $15 spent (Club cards, capped at 32,000 PQP/year). But the math is brutal: Platinum would require $270,000 in spend.

What is the 5% PQP head start?

Eligible United cardholders get 5% of their tier’s PQP requirement deposited at the start of 2027 (300/600/900/1,600 for Silver/Gold/Platinum/1K). Open a card by Dec 31, 2026 to qualify.
